Learning to Selectively Attend
نویسنده
چکیده
How is reinforcement learning possible in a high-dimensional world? Without making any assumptions about the structure of the state space, the amount of data required to effectively learn a value function grows exponentially with the state space’s dimensionality. However, humans learn to solve highdimensional problems much more rapidly than would be expected under this scenario. This suggests that humans employ inductive biases to guide (and accelerate) their learning. Here we propose one particular bias—sparsity—that ameliorates the computational challenges posed by high-dimensional state spaces, and present experimental evidence that humans can exploit sparsity information when it is available.

The Interactions of Category Structure and Supervision in Category Learning: a comparative approach
The current study investigated the interactions among category structure, supervision, and the ability to selectively attend during category learning. Specifically, we compared pigeons’ with human adults’ category learning using artificial categories to examine the role of selective attention in category learning. Results showed that pigeons benefit more from supervision, and unlike human adult...
متن کاملContextual modulation of attention in human category learning.
In a category-learning experiment, we assessed whether participants were able to selectively attend to different components of a compound stimulus in two distinct contexts. The participants were presented with stimulus compounds for which they had to learn categorical labels. Each compound comprised one feature from each of two dimensions, and on different trials the compound was presented in t...
متن کاملDevelopment of selective attention in category learning
Categorization, the process of grouping distinguishable entities into equivalence classes, is an essential component of human cognition. Although it has been often argued that selective attention is an important component of categorization, organism with immature selective attention (such as human infants or young children) exhibit the ability to learn categories. This research addresses this a...
متن کاملOn the Influence of Stroke on Willingness to Attend Classes and Foreign Language Achievement
Given the significance of teacher care and its impact on student motivation, stroke as a unit of recognition seems to be related to motivation for class attendance and language learning. In this regard, this paper aimed to investigate the role of stroke in students’ willingness to attend classes (WTAC) and their foreign language achievement (FLA) in the foreign language context. To this end, a ...
متن کاملThe Effect of Acute Ethanol and Gabapentin Administration on Spatial Learning and Memory
Introduction: Patients with epilepsy can have impaired cognitive abilities. Many factors contribute to this impairment, including the adverse effects of antiepileptic drugs like Gabapentin (GBP). Apart from anti-epilectic action, Gabapentin is used to relieve ethanol withdrawal syndrome. Because both GBP and ethanol act on GABA ergic system, the purpose of this study was to evaluate their effe...
متن کاملUnsupervised category learning with integral-dimension stimuli.
Despite the recent surge in research on unsupervised category learning, the majority of studies have focused on unconstrained tasks in which no instructions are provided about the underlying category structure. Relatively little research has focused on constrained tasks in which the goal is to learn predefined stimulus clusters in the absence of feedback. The few studies that have addressed thi...
